Anybody who knows me knows that I'm a sucker for true crime stories. I absolutely love programs like 20/20, Unsolved Mysteries, and I Survived..., and I am constantly listening to podcasts like My Favorite Murder and MrBallen. Sure, I watched some awesome, fictional shows this year, like True Detective: Night Country, but it's the real stories that fascinate and terrify me.

The number of documentaries and docuseries that I watched this year is very long, but I put together a list of ten of my favorites. All ten of the programs I chose came out in 2024, and the streaming service where you can watch them is listed next to the title.

  • Anatomy of Lies - Peacock
    • This three-part docuseries follows TV writer Elisabeth Finch, who was best known for her work on "Grey's Anatomy." In the series, you discover that Elisabeth's entire life is built on lies, and you see the impact of those lies on her career, her marriage, and all the people in her orbit.
    • 7.2/10 on IMDB
  • Girls Gone Wild: The Untold Story - Peacock
    • The three-part series outlines the rise and fall of the once-popular "Girls Gone Wild" and its impact on society. But, even more interesting than that is the examination of its notorious creator Joe Francis and his many sins.
    • 5.7/10 on IMDB
  • Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare - Netflix
    • This documentary is an account of what might be one of the most insane catfishing schemes of all time. Kirat is lead on by the mysterious "Bobby" for literal YEARS, until she eventually uncovers the truth of who he really is.
    • 6.2/10 on IMDB
  • Dancing for the Devil: The 7M TikTok Cult - Netflix
    • There are quite a few popular dancers on TikTok who are involved in a cult that calls itself a management company. This program follows the lives of the dancers who have left 7M, and the family that is still trying to get one of their own out of it.
  • 6.1/10 on IMDB
  • Dirty Pop: The Boy Band Scam - Netflix
    • The boy band phenomenon was started by Lou Pearlman in the 90s, but he spent just as much time scamming as he did managing iconic groups like the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC. This three part series dives into Lou's shady dealings and the consequences of his actions, as well as the victims that pursued justice against him.
    • 6.5/10 on IMDB
  • The Program: Cons, Cults, and Kidnapping - Netflix
    • This shocking three-episode docuseries takes a deep look into the troubled teen industry and just how damaging it can be. It follows former students of the Academy at Ivy Ridge as they try to work through their trauma and attempt to prevent other kids from suffering the same abuse and neglect.
    • 7.4/10 on IMDB
  • Files of the Unexplained - Netflix
    • "Perplexing phenomena are meticulously explored in this investigative docuseries, which uncovers the truth behind eerie encounters, bizarre disappearances, and haunting events." The eight-episode first season features the missing Yuba County Five, the Pascagoula Alien Abduction, the mysteries of Mt. Shasta, and more
  • 5.4/10 on IMDB
  • Six Schizophrenic Brothers - MAX
    • Imagine having 12 children and finding out over time that HALF of them have severe schizophrenia. This four-part limited series examines the struggles of the Galvin family and the impact that the mental illness had on all of their lives.
    • 7.1/10 on IMDB
  • Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini - Hulu
    • After Sherri Papini disappears near her California home back in 2016, she makes headlines around the world. But, after she returns home, nobody believes her story. It's not until after she and her husband are demonized by police and the media that Sherri's version of events is confirmed, and this three-part series takes us through the entire journey.
    • 7.3/10 on IMDB
  • Little Miss Innocent: Passion. Poison. Prison. - Hulu
    • 31-year-old Kaitlyn Conley was convicted of killing her boss and boyfriend's mother Mary Yoder in 2015, but, to this day, she claims she was wrongfully convicted. In this four-episode series, you hear from Kaitlyn herself, as she tries to convince everyone that she's innocent.
    • 6.6/10 on IMDB
