Who doesn't love a deal? That's why people keep having garage sales. You get a great price on a gently used item that still has some life in it. But there are certain things that you need to avoid at garage sales, namely for safety reasons. You may get a deal up front, but they could end up costing you a lot in the future!

  • Bike Helmets. You don't know the history of the helmet. It may have already been involved in an accident and ultimately wouldn't provide much protection for your child if they were to get into one.
  • Car Seats. Tough to resist a deal on one of these, as good ones can be expensive to buy in the store. But with recalls and changing safety guidelines there is no guarantee the seat isn't defective.
  • Kitchen appliances. They may only work part of the time, or worse yet, pose a fire risk.
  • Tires. They could be on recall, the tread could be worn down. It's not worth putting your family at risk.
  • Mattresses. Do you want to lay down in other people's dirt, bacteria and....bodily fluids? I didn't think so.
  • Cribs. Once again, safety issues. Has it been recalled? Not worth putting your young one at risk.
  • Baby Bottles. Bacteria could be living on them. Not worth saving a few bucks.
  • Running shoes. They are molded to your feet after you break them in. Why run in a shoe that fits someone else's foot. Ouch.
