The Words That Iowa and the Midwest are the Worst at Spelling
Happy spelling bee season!
In case you didn't know, there are currently 231 kids competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee over in National Harbor, Maryland. In honor of the big event, Google decided to figure out that words that each state is the worst at spelling.
To put together their map, Google looked at search data for "how to spell [BLANK]" in all 50 states. Some of the results make sense, but others are a bit surprising...
According to the Google data, Iowans have a hard time spelling the word "Thursday." Really? THURSDAY?! I would think that Wednesday would be more difficult to spell than Thursday! Either way, we all should've learned to spell the days of the week in elementary school.
Curious about what other words that Midwesterners have trouble spelling? Here are the ones that surrounding Midwest states are looking up:
- Minnesota - Kindergarten
- Missouri - February
- Wisconsin - Patience
- Illinois - Tomorrow
- South Dakota & Nebraska - Finally
I'd like to think that I'm a pretty good speller, but there are still a few words that get me EVERY time. Most notably, the word "souvenir." And yes, I DID have to use spell-check to type that correctly. The words "sentence" and "calendar" also trip me up every so often. I once spelled "dramatically" wrong during a school spelling bee, so that's one word I will never forget!
