The Most Popular Dessert in the State of Iowa
When I first moved to Iowa almost 5 years ago (where has the time gone?!), there were quite a few foods I was unfamiliar with. I had never heard of breakfast pizza, enormous breaded pork tenderloins, Maid-Rites, or kolaches. Also on that list was the most popular dessert in Iowa! According to Buzzfeed, that honor goes to Scotcheroos!
Wikipedia describes Scotcheroos as "dessert bars with chocolate, butterscotch, peanut butter, and Rice Krispies." The very simple recipe was actually posted on the Rice Krispies box back in the 1960s. The Rice Krispies official website has the recipe listed, in case you're interested. You can check that out HERE.
I've never attempted to make them myself (I'm not much of a baker), but I very much enjoy when other people serve them at parties and BBQs. I'm so glad Iowa has introduced me to so many delicious foods!
Some choices from surrounding states include:
- Minnesota - Lemon Bars
- Missouri - Gooey Butter Cake
- Illinois - Frozen Custard
- Nebraska - Tin Roof Sundae
- South Dakota - Kuchen
- Wisconsin - Custard
Are Scotcheroos your go-to dessert, or do you prefer something else? Tell us your favorite to make in the comments!
