‘The Last Jedi’ A Different Star Wars Film [VIDEO]
I was among the crowds of people who went to see the latest Star Wars movie 'The Last Jedi' this weekend. The film did over $220 million at the box office making it the second biggest opening weekend ever. I went into the movie with high hopes. I was seeking answers to questions that were raised in 'The Force Awakens.' What director Rian Johnson has given fans is a 'different' Star Wars movie.
First of all, I will reveal no spoilers in my review. I went into "The Last Jedi' knowing none of the spoilers myself. The film itself is the longest Star Wars movie at over 2 and a half hours. But the pace is brisk and there is so much going on it flies right by. So what makes this a different kind of Star Wars movie? All I'll say is that there are certain aspects of the Star Wars universe that are explored differently than other films. One might even say expanded upon. I certainly didn't have any problem with the way they were handled, but some Star Wars purists do.
'The Last Jedi' though belongs to Mark Hamill. His portrayal of Luke Skywalker is fantastic. You really see a different side to Luke and what he has gone through. His story arc in the movie is great and one of the best parts of the film. Carrie Fisher was also great in the movie. Sadly, it will be her last time on film as she passed away just after filming completed. Our new heroes Rey, Finn, and Poe are all fantastic in the movie as well.
Now I'm not saying that this movie is perfect. There is one subplot in the film that I felt was largely unneeded. They could have trimmed 15 minutes off the film and no one would have noticed. There were a couple of other moments that surprised me at the time too, but after I let them sink in I was OK with what they meant. The bottom line is, 'The Last Jedi' is a fantastic Star Wars movie and one the likes we've never seen before. It has nostalgia. It has humor. It has hope. I can't wait to see it again.
