The End To The Strangest School Year Ever

Last night Holly and I had the kids pose for the annual 'Last Day of School' photo. I'm not sure when their last day should have been, probably last week. Chase completes his online work for his freshman year of high school on June 3rd. There was no jubilation or excitement for the upcoming summer. Heck, they've been home since the middle of March! It's the ending to a surreal year.

Chase was a freshman at Marion High School this year. He played football, got hurt, couldn't play, and sat out most of the year. He was really looking forward to running track this spring for Marion. He practiced for two weeks and never got to run in a meet. Coronavirus canceled spring sports for all our kids. Cayleigh, our 4th grader, was supposed to play travel softball for the first time. Her Marion 10U team will get to play a limited season and a few tournaments this June and July. Carly, in 5th grade,  is still waiting to hear if her league will get to play games or not.

It's going to be a strange summer vacation too. No going to the pool. No going to fairs or concerts. This summer is going to be filled with lots of backyard cooking, weekend fires in the fire pit, and water balloon fights around the yard. Vacations this year might be spent in a tent in your friend's backyard.

Not that these things are bad of course. When I was a kid, we didn't have the internet or online gaming. I had my brother, the outdoors, and our imagination. And let me tell you, those were some great summers. So to all the kids out there whose school year ended differently than you wanted it to, make the most of your summer. No matter what it looks like. Enjoy yourself....because August will be here before you know it!
