Happy National Cheeseburger Day 2020!

Yes, today is National Cheeseburger Day, which is not to be confused with National Burger Day (that happened back on May 28th). There are a few ways you can celebrate today's holiday, but the very best way is to order an amazing burger from one of the great locally-owned restaurants here in Eastern Iowa.

Unfortunately, if you want to try the best burger in Iowa according to a new list from The Daily Meal, you will have to travel out of Eastern Iowa and over to Des Moines. Before we get to that, though, we need to know how the website decided on their picks. The article says that they started by looking at their annual ranking of the 101 Best Burgers in America, "which is compiled via a survey with hundreds of burgers on it given to a panel of noted writers, journalists, bloggers, and culinary authorities from across the country to vote on." They also read plenty of online reviews and checked out other "best-of" lists.

After all that research, the Daily Meal's number one choice for Iowa is Zombie Burger, which has two locations in Des Moines. The article reads:

"Zombie Burger & Drink Lab in Des Moines, Iowa, has more than 20 different burgers, with cheeky horror-themed names like The Walking Ched and They’re Coming to Get You Barbara. The Undead Elvis is among the most popular and features peanut butter, fried bananas, bacon, American cheese, egg, and mayo. There are also a few vegan-friendly options on the menu."

'The Walking Ched' is my personal favorite Zombie Burger menu item, but the 'They're Coming to Get You Barbara' and the 'Raygun' are delicious, too!

Zombie Burger once had locations in Iowa City and at Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville, but both restaurants are now closed. The Iowa City location closed up shop in 2018, while the Coral Ridge Mall restaurant closed earlier this year because of the coronavirus pandemic (you can read more about that closure HERE).
