When Matt Campbell left Iowa State for the head football coaching position at Penn State, you figured that some high-profile players and coaches would follow him there. That list now includes his former starting quarterback.

Former ISU Quarterback Rocco Becht Makes it Official

Former Cyclone quarterback Rocco Becht told ESPN that he is following his head coach, Matt Campbell, to Penn State. Becht will have one year of eligibility for Penn State. He'll bring his 26 career wins with him, the most by any returning quarterback in college football in 2026.

Why Did Rocco Becht Choose Penn State?

Becht drew interest from teams from every major NCAA conference, but told ESPN that he chose Penn State for one reason: Familiarity. Becht will reunite with head coach Matt Campbell, as well as offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser and quarterback coach Jake Waters. Becht will get to play in the same system, for the same coaches, as he did the past two years at Iowa State.

Rocco Becht Recovering From Surgery

One reason that Becht's production for ISU dipped last season was due to injuries. ESPN reports that Becht had surgery on the labrum in his non-throwing shoulder. He'll be in a sling until January 11th, with a return to action sometime in mid-April. ESPN also reports that he suffered an AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder late in the season.

What Can Becht Do for Penn State?

Becht told ESPN that Penn State has its sights set on a ten-win season, reaching the Big Ten Championship game, and being part of the College Football Playoff. Somehow, I think Matt Campbell would be just fine with any one of those.
