The Cedar Rapids Police Department is warning drivers that many area roads in Linn County are dangerous and even impassable, due to blowing and drifting snow that has occurred in the last 24 hours.

The Southwest area on the outskirts of the city of Cedar Rapids is one of the worst areas affected by the blowing and drifting snow. Cars piled up in snowdrifts posted in the photos on the CRPD Facebook page really show the extent of the storm's impact.

CBS 2 News reports many area roads are still snow covered and slick and some area schools are still closed or at least delayed. Our news partners report that "travel is not advised on southwest roads on the outskirts of the city. Roads with large drifts and whiteout conditions include 6th Street, 18th Street and Edgewood Rd SW between 60th Ave. and Wright Brothers Blvd."

The city says crews have also stopped snow removal in those areas due to safety concerns. Residents are advised to avoid those roads and seek alternative routes.

And check out this amazing video shot in eastern Iowa this morning. It was taken driving south of Highway 30 on Blairstown Road.
