Iowa Police say a man who was shot and killed last month was killed by a man he'd been texting with for months. The entire time, police say the accused killer was posing as a woman.

According to a criminal complaint, 31-year-old Tommy Curry of Iowa City was shot multiple times in his vehicle at Meadow Lark Apartments on Lakeside Drive at approximately 10 p.m. on Monday, April 28, 2021.

Witnesses to the shooting said a man approached Curry's vehicle and began to shoot. Those same witnesses saw a white SUV leave the scene afterward.

Investigators with the Iowa City Police Department reviewed Curry's cell phone records and found texts between him and an unknown number. The texts had begun more than three months earlier. Police say Curry had first made contact with the other person on a dating website and that the other person was posing as a woman. On April 28, texts showed Curry would meet the other person at Meadow Lark Apartments.

Iowa City Police were able to determine the phone number used to text Curry, and the dating website, both were connected to 29-year-old Renard Winfield, Jr. of Gary, Indiana.

Multiple surveillance videos also showed a white Dodge Journey, registered to one of Winfield's relatives, was in Iowa City on April 27 and 28. There is also a surveillance video that shows Winfield, Jr. driving the vehicle. Other surveillance videos show the vehicle in the vicinity of the murder on the night of April 28. Cell phone records corroborated that Winfield was in the area at the time of the shooting.

After Winfield, Jr.'s cellphone was seized, authorities say they found screenshots of Curry's dating profile on the phone, a video of Winfield with a gun they believe was used in the murder, and another video of him with ammunition found at the murder scene. Authorities also say they have surveillance video showing Winfield buying the same type of ammunition prior to the day of the shooting.

Winfield, Jr. was booked into the Johnson County Jail Saturday afternoon, May 15. He's been charged with First-Degree Murder and First-Degree Harassment. He's being held on $100 million and $50,000 bond, respectively, on the two charges. He told investigators with the Iowa City Police Department that he hadn't been in Iowa City since late March of 2021 and the Dodge Journey hadn't been in the city, either.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports Winfield was shot at a residence on H. Street in Iowa City on June 25, 2020. A man was at the home when Winfield arrived that day. The unnamed man left shortly after and following a short argument with the woman at the home, Winfield also left. Within seconds, the Gazette says Winfield returned with a gunshot wound to one of his legs.
