Old Creamery Theatre Has Canceled Their Entire 2020 Season

The Old Creamery Theatre Board of Directors announced yesterday that they are canceling the rest of the shows set for their 2020 season, and the decision was not an easy one. Board President Peter Teahen said in the press release:

"While we never imagined in our nearly 50-year history that we'd have to make such a heartbreaking decision, we know it is in the best interest of our audiences, artists and staff. The substantial uncertainties surrounding COVID-19 paralyze our ability to forge a clear and fiscally responsible path to present a Season that relies on large-group attendance, so we must make this difficult but necessary adjustment to ensure the safety of our patrons and the long-term health of the theatre."

The cancelation includes all shows through December 20th. That includes:

Steel Magnolias (June 3rd -14th)
Nana Does Vegas (July 30th - August 23rd)
Legally Blonde The Musical (September 3rd - 20th)
Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story (September 25th - October 4th)
The Church Basement Ladies in You Smell Barn (October 8th - November 8th)
Miracle on 34th Street - The Musical (November 19th - December 20th)
Theatre for Young Audiences
- Curious George: The Golden Meatball (July 14th - July 25th)
- Click, Clack, Boo! A Tricky Treat (October 17th - October 31st)
- Junie B. Jones: The Musical (November 28th - December 19th)

If you already purchased tickets to one of these shows, Old Creamery Theatre will be contacting you individually about your options. The press release notes that ticket sales account for 80% of Old Creamery's budget, so you may want to consider donating that money back to the organization. A COVID-19 Relief Fund has also been established for the theatre.

Old Creamery Theatre is also looking to generate revenue with some virtual options. The Gazette reports that they have already launched online acting classes for ages 3 to 12. In addition to that, the group held a virtual cabaret called “Songs to Make You Smile” in early April, and they plan to bring the show back on May 23rd. It will broadcast on YouTube live at 7:30 p.m. and benefit not only Old Creamery Theatre, but also Riverside Theatre in Iowa City, Coralville Center for the Performing Arts, and Theatre Cedar Rapids.
