More Job Cuts as Knutson Construction Announces 40 Layoffs in Iowa City
It’s always a tough day when people lose their jobs, particularly when it’s through no fault of their own. Recently, Iowa has faced a series of unsettling job losses that have left many in the community reeling.
To start, John Deere has made headlines with a significant number of layoffs, impacting hundreds of workers. This is a major blow to both the employees and the local economy. Following this, Duluth Trading Company has also contributed to the wave of job losses by announcing the closure of one of their distribution warehouses. This decision has resulted in 70 employees losing their jobs, further straining the job market.

Now, there’s more concerning news on the horizon. Knutson Construction has revealed plans to lay off 40 workers in Iowa City by the end of next month. This upcoming reduction will undoubtedly add to the growing list of job losses in the state, creating additional challenges for those affected and for the local economy as a whole. Knutson Construction released a statement via a spokesperson to KCRG TV 'While this is the right decision for our business, it is difficult because it impacts our Iowa City employees,” Amy Schilling said. “Our top priority over the next several months is aligning this transition with our core values as an organization, and most notably how we treat our customers, partners, and employees.'
Knutson Construction was named, along with another contractor, in a lawsuit brought by the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital in 2022. The lawsuit is for a "defective window system". No word if the lawsuit was a contributing factor in the layoffs.
As these layoffs unfold, it’s important for communities and support networks to come together to provide assistance and opportunities for those who are impacted.
