Minimum Wage On The Rise In North Liberty

The city council in North Liberty has decided not to opt out of a plan that will raise the minimum wage in the eastern Iowa city. Minimum wage workers in the Johnson County city currently make $9.50 an hour. That will go up to $10.10 in January. The statewide minimum wage is $7.25.

Many people got up to speak at the city council meeting and described how opting out of the minimum wage raise would negatively affect their families. Some city council members expressed concerns about how small businesses with less than five employees would keep up with the wage hike. Some council members also weren't happy with how the ordinance was passed last year.
