Man Drowns While Swimming In Mississippi River With His Grandkids
An outing with the grandkids turned tragic for a Wisconsin family Saturday afternoon, May 22, when a man drowned.
According to KWWL, the Grant County (Wisconsin) Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call just before 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The call was regarding a possible drowning victim, around a mile north of the Potosi Point. That's located not far from Balltown, Iowa, on the Wisconson side of the Mississippi River.
An investigator was able to determine that a man, his wife, and two grandkids were swimming along a sand beach island that has been made visible by the river's low water levels. KWWL reports that the man, 63-year-old Mitchell Hochhausen of Potosi, Wisconsin swam out further into the river to get something that had gotten away. Witnesses said he was unable to get back to the shallow water, and went under in an area of the river that was approximately 6-feet deep.
Hochhausen's body was recovered by rescue crews just before 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening. The Grant County Coroner pronounced him dead at the boat landing.
