While most fans at Principal Park in Des Moines will be Iowa Cubs fans on Tuesday, some will be there to catch a glimpse of a future Hall of Fame pitcher making a rare appearance in Iowa.

Future Hall of Fame Pitcher Makes a Stop in Iowa

The Des Moines Register reports that future Hall of Fame pitcher Justin Verlander is scheduled to make a rehab assignment start for the Toledo Mud Hens on Tuesday, June 2nd. Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch made the announcement on May 31st. Toledo is the Triple-A team of the Detroit Tigers.

How Did Verlander Get Injured?

The Register reports that the 43-year-old Verlander has been on the injured list since April 1st with left hip inflammation. He was put on the 60-day injured list on May 10th, but now appears to be on the verge of returning, given his start in Iowa on Tuesday.

Verlander's start in Iowa is a big deal for baseball fans. The Register points out that he is one of the best right-handed pitchers of this generation. Verlander is a 9-time All-Star, 3-time Cy Young Award winner, and a 2-time World Series Champion. He has 266 career wins and over 3,500 strikeouts.

Verlander is in his second stint with the Tigers. He has also pitched for Houston, San Francisco, and the New York Mets. Many fans are certainly wondering if this is Verlander's final season in the big leagues.
