250 People To Lose Jobs After General Mills Closes Iowa Plant
A frustrating situation for hundreds of people in Independence.
Officials from the manufacturer General Mills announced earlier this week that they would be closing one of their plants located in Independence. Specifically, they will be shutting down the pet treat factory, Blue Buffalo.
The Blue Buffalo plant creates Top Chews and Nudges pet treats.
This comes nearly two years to the day that Tyson Foods sold the pet treats plant, according to reports. Officials confirm that the Independence pet treat facility was sold to General Mills for $1.2 million.
The shutdown comes as a surprise as the company was lauding the success they had achieved in this facility in October of 2022, according to reports. General Mills was looking to fill 30 open positions back in the fall.
Starting pay at the Blue Buffalo plant in Independence was $19.75 .
It has been confirmed that production at this plant will stop by the end of 2023. So, in seven months approximately 250 Independence workers will be out of the job, according to reports.
General Mills officials did say that many employee benefits will be provided to these workers will be provided whilst they determine their next step. These benefits include: retirement, health benefits, career services, etc.
