Each year, people are always looking for the best "something," best beer, best burger, best car wash... Now, while there are so many classic sandwiches out there, which diner or restaurant truly does them best in the Tri-States? It's a question people attempt to answer each year, which sent me to a recent study from OnlyInYourState.com.

There are few foods as universally loved, or endlessly customizable, as the sandwich. Across the U.S., this simple concept has basically been elevated into an art form. From no-frills neighborhood delis and legacy counter spots to modern shops reinventing the classics, great sandwiches tell the story of the places, cultures, and people behind them. They reflect regional flavors, immigrant influences, and the kind of care that turns bread, meat, cheese, and condiments into something uniquely unforgettable. It seems a trip might be in order to try out these good eats, as I have never been to, let alone heard of them.

In Illinois, Chicago’s Johnnie’s Beef is an iconic stop, best known for its legendary Italian beef sandwich. Thinly sliced jus-soaked beef, piled onto a sturdy roll, and finished with sweet or hot peppers. It’s messy, bold, classic Chicago, and completely unforgettable. This is the kind of sandwich you plan a trip around, and one that defines the state's sandwich culture.

In my home state of Iowa, the top spot is from my wife's neck of the woods. Canteen Lunch in the Alley in Ottumwa offers a different kind of charm. Famous for its no-frills, old-school sandwiches, the classic cheese sandwich is said to steal the show. Simple, grilled, and surprisingly perfect. There’s nothing flashy here, just decades of consistency and local love, a reminder that sometimes the most memorable sandwiches are also the simplest ones.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin delivers family-run authenticity at Glorioso’s Italian Market in Milwaukee. Founded in 1946, this small Italian deli is filled with Mediterranean favorites. Hot options like Italian Beef or Chicken Parm are always a hit, and breakfast fans shouldn’t miss a ham-based morning sandwich. Glorioso’s combines tradition, flavor, and community, making it a true Milwaukee favorite. By the way, they are celebrating over 80 years in business, with a chance to win prizes and enjoy sales and giveaways.

The shops on this list weren’t picked at random, according to OnlyInYourState.com. Winners were selected based on a mix of reader nominations, expert reviews, and awards, alongside the most important factor: flavor. Quality ingredients, freshness, and standout taste set the bar high, while accessibility, affordability, and overall value made sure the sandwiches were worth seeking out. Innovation and creativity were also rewarded, highlighting spots that honor their culinary roots and are truly memorable.

The Tri-State region proves that sandwiches come in endless forms, but all share one thing in common: a dedication to flavor. And while these spots are worth the journey, they’re just the beginning. Local eateries throughout the Tri-States continue to serve up hidden gems that make every bite an experience worth savoring. Keep scrolling to check some of them out!
