A legendary NFL coach, who worked with some of the greatest players in league history, like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, is calling it a career after 62 years of coaching.

Tom Moore is 87-years-old. For the past seven seasons, he's been an offensive consultant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Not the most demanding job in the world, but a job that he could potentially do better than anyone. So few NFL coaches have his depth of experience. And one of the coolest things about Moore? His football story started with the state of Iowa.

Tom Moore's Career Began in Iowa:

Despite being born in Minnesota all the way back in 1938, Tom Moore's football origin story started in Mount Pleasant, IA. He would go on to play quarterback at the University of Iowa from 1958 - 1960, winning the National Championship in 1958. From there, he made the transition to coaching, assuming the role of a grad assistant at Iowa in the early sixties before spending the next several years taking on an abundance of different roles for various college programs.

Moore is probably best known for being the offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts from 1998 - 2010. During that period of time, he worked almost exclusively with Peyton Manning, and helped the team win the Super Bowl in 2006. Moore has quite the trophy case, with four Super Bowl rings total, his most recent coming in 2021 when Tom Brady led the Buccaneers to win it all.

Why Tom Moore is Retiring:

Moore revealed that he is retiring to spend more time with his wife, Willie, who suffered a stroke earlier in 2026:

It’s time for me to go home and take care of my wife. For 62 years, she made a lot of sacrifices so I could live a dream and it’s always been about Tom but now it’s about Willie - Tom Moore, per People Magazine

In 2025, Moore received the Paul "Dr. Z" Zimmerman Award from the Pro Football Writers of America. During his final stop in Tampa Bay, he was clearly someone who provided a lot of input to head coaches Bruce Arians and Todd Bowles.
