National Pizza Day was Monday, February 9th, which was especially fitting given it more-or-less coincided with Super Bowl LX the day prior. Surely, millions of Americans consumed an ungodly amount of pizza for the big game between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.

The national holiday celebrating one of the most globally beloved delicacies evidently got the folks at High Risk Pay wondering how exactly each state likes their pizza. Iowans of course have their preferences too, so in relation to their massive study, that's what I'm going to focus on.

Some Pizza Stats from Around the Country:

Before we dive into the pizza preferences of Iowans, here are some key takeaways High Risk Bet found when conducting their study:

  • The most common pizza order nationwide includes classic crusttomato saucemozzarella cheesepepperonimushroomsno dipping sauce, and chicken wings on the side.
  • Nearly one in four Americans eats pizza at least once a week, with the highest weekly consumption reported in midwestern states: OhioWisconsinMichigan, and Minnesota (I can attest to this; my girlfriend and I eat it at least once a week).
  • Americans spend an average of $383.14 on pizza each year, with Michigan ($522.02), New York ($496.35), Ohio ($494.16), and Minnesota ($479.12) spending the most.

What Kind of Pizza Do Iowans Like?:

Rather than name one specific type of pizza, High Risk Pay broke down the most popular choice of each part of the pizza: crust, sauce, cheese, meat, veggie, etc. Here's the breakdown:

  • Crust: Classic crust
  • Sauce: Red (tomato) sauce
  • Cheese: Mozzarella
  • Meat topping: Pepperoni
  • Veggie topping: Onions
  • Favorite pre-built/specialty pizza: Pepperoni
  • Favorite pizza chain: Pizza Hut

Ironically, while Iowans' favorite pizza chain is apparently Pizza Hut, last week, I wrote about how the chain has fallen on hard times lately and is looking to close 250 stores across the country. It remains to be seen if we lose any Pizza Hut locations in Iowa.
