World Atlas just shared what they believe are the 7 natural wonders that you must visit this year in Illinois and number one on their list is an excellent choice. It's the Garden of the Gods in the Shawnee National Forest. That region is without a doubt the most popular place to hike in Illinois and there isn't really a close second. It's 5 1/2 miles of the most scenic area of Illinois surrounding you. There are also a dozen camping sites that will only cost you a modest $10 fee. If you're up to a road trip to the southeastern part of Illinois this is the best outdoors choice you can make.

When people who have never been to Illinois imagine it, the hustle and bustle of Chicago is often what comes to mind. No offense intended to the Windy City, but the heavily-forested part of southern Illinois is the real attraction in the state. All of the fun city things you can do in Chicago are fine if that's your preference, but don't underestimate the gorgeous outdoors in the Shawnee National Forest. The "garden" of huge rocks are a sight you'll never forget and truly is a natural wonder you should experience at least once in your life.
