Exciting Changes Coming To Former Cedar Rapids Movie Theater
The vacant AMC movie theater on the west side of Cedar Rapids finally has a new future.
Even though I lived on the other side of town, I can remember seeing several movies at the old AMC Westdale Theater. It opened as the Wynnsong 12 in 1999. I saw 'Finding Nemo' with my wife at that theater. I saw one of the 'Lord of the Rings' films there with some friends and co-workers. The Corridor Business Journal reports that AMC purchased the theater in 2016. It shut down during the COVID pandemic in 2020, but AMC promised it would re-open when the pandemic was over. It never did. The CBJ reports that AMC confirmed in February of 2023 that the theater was permanently closed.
Now, the CBJ is reporting that the abandoned movie theater has a new owner, and will soon re-open as an entirely new business. According to records from the Cedar Rapids accessor's office, a building permit has been issued for an interior remodel of the old movie theater into a 'Fun City Trampoline Park' according to the CBJ. Records show that demolition began in mid-December and remodeling started on February 3rd.
The CBJ reports that the old theater was sold at auction for $750,000 in a two-day auction on December 4th. Records show that the buyer was SVC1 LLC based in Newton, Massachusetts.
Fun City Trampoline Park will join two other similar facilities in the area. AirFX Trampoline Park in Hiawatha, and SkyZone Trampoline Park on Council Street in Cedar Rapids.
No opening date for the new trampoline park has been announced.
