Iowans Aren’t as Outdoorsy as You Would’ve Imagined
We've got a lot of hard working people here in Iowa who enjoy their time outdoors whether it's hunting, fishing, or just loving being outside. I mean how can you not when you're surrounded by lots of land and fields of crops? That being said, you'd think Iowans would rank pretty high when it comes to being outdoorsy right?-- Wrong.
According to the 2017 National Recreation Economy Report released by the Outdoor Industry Association, 61-65% of Iowans participate in outdoor activities. Now that's not a bad percentage at first glance. But, when you compare it to places like Colorado (71%), North Dakota (76%), or Alaska (81%) it's not as impressive.
Granted, the places with the highest percentages of outdoorsy people are places where the outdoors have waaayyy more to offer. It's pretty hard for our fields of crops to compete with the mountains or giant lakes. Although, there are some nice spots to hike, camp, float and just spend time outdoors here in Iowa. Just take a look at some of the beautiful views that one of our many parks has to offer.
