Former Hawkeye Linebacker Will Replace Ed Podolak in Radio Booth
Replacing a legend is never easy. Whoever got the job alongside Iowa Hawkeye play-by-play man Gary Dolphin would be replacing Ed Podolak who held the position since 1982. But Iowa made a choice yesterday and kept the job in the Hawkeye family.
Hawk Central reports that 37-year-old Pat Angerer is your new analyst on gamedays for the Iowa Hawkeye radio network. Angerer played middle linebacker at Iowa and was a second-round draft pick in the NFL. Gary Dolphin said that he loves Angerer's energy saying, "He's colorful. He loves Iowa, and he loves Iowa football." Angerer spend his entire NFL career with the Indianapolis Colts, eventually retiring due to ankle and knee injuries.
What will Angerer be like in the booth? Hawk Central reports that he doesn't plan to hold back. Angerer said "You’ve got to be honest, otherwise fans will pick it apart...Iowa fans are very knowledgeable." Angerer was selected from a pool of four finalists, according to Hawk Central. The others who were in contention were also all Iowa natives and had played under coach Kirk Ferentz. They included quarterback James Vandenberg, defensive lineman Mitch King, and kicker Nate Kaeding.
So what does the future hold for play-by-play man Gary Dolphin? He'll be 73 years old next month. Hawk Central reports that he used to talk about going out when Ed Podolak did. However, Dolphin says that he'll continue on for at least another few years, saying "My health is good. They still want me."
