Parking Rates in Iowa City Will Be Increasing Next Month
The next time you visit Downtown Iowa City, you'll have to pay a little bit more to park! A new article from the Iowa City Press Citizen says that parking rates will be going up beginning on Monday, July 1st.
According to the Iowa City Government website, the Iowa City Council approved an increase in parking rates in the city back on May 21st. This is actually the first time that rates have increased since 2013. The website reads:
"This increase comes as maintenance costs for parking facilities have seen a significant increase over 11 years. Current revenue from parking fees covers only 22% of the Parking Division’s budget."
While the rates for parking permits won't be changing, there will be changes for parking ramps, metered street parking, and parking tickets. Here are some of those changes, courtesy of the Iowa City Government website:
- The first hour of parking in all ramps will be free
- Ramp parking will be $2 an hour after the first hour
- Metered street parking in the Central Business District will be $3 an hour (up from $1.50)
- Metered street parking in outlying areas will be $1.50 an hour (up from .75 or $1)
- Expired parking meter rates:
- 1st offense - warning
- 2nd offense - $10
- 3rd offense - $15
- 4th offense - $20
- 5th offense - $30
- 6th+ offense - $40
