Modern day Thanksgiving has grown to be an american staple of sharing and peace, not a "Ted Talk" about your weird uncle Ted's stance on climate change. There will be times where you may want to smack the gravy out of your family's mouths, but just stay calm --you wouldn't want to ruin dessert. Here are some tips on how to handle your family when politics get brought up during Thanksgiving dinner. Hopefully this will add some Zen to your evening during the holiday.

    Ban Politics From the Get-Go

Just don't talk about it! If you know that there will be irreconcilable differences at the table, make it a rule beforehand to engage in polite conversation. Also remember that seating arrangements can be key to keeping the peace.

If Politics Arise, Keep it Cool

Contrary to popular belief, it IS possible to disagree politically and still engage in a conversation. Just make sure to say something along the lines of "I would be happy to talk about this with you, but we may disagree". Let's agree to keep it civil and listen. It's perfectly okay to disagree, that's something that makes our country beautiful.

If you Don't Know Something be Honest

Should you get into a hot and heavy debate, and something is brought up that you are unsure of, don't be afraid to say, "I haven't researched that" or "I'd like to learn more about that". This is perfectly reasonable etiquette. This year fake news and the spread of misinformation has been abundant problem especially on Facebook. It never hurts to fact check and follow up. If things are civil you may even change a stance or two.

    Find Something you Agree On

I know, I know. That's a huge ask, but you might be surprised. It could take digging through some cringey conversation, but you may end up having some ideas or beliefs in common. If you can find that diamond in the rough, why not focus on why.

    Focus on the Positives

Any way you slice it, 2016 has been a pretty rough year for politics, pop culture, and America as a whole. Focus on the things that make you THANKFUL, the roof over your head or the wifi that allows you to read this!
