The First Avenue Hy-Vee grocery store closed in June of 2024. Since then, there has been what is termed as a 'food desert' for residents in the area who need food. A new market is scheduled to open this weekend, bringing fresh produce to people who haven't been able to get any for over a year.

New Asian Market to Open This Weekend

The Corridor Business Journal reports that the Hornbill Asian Market is expected to open this Saturday, December 20th. After a series of construction delays and setbacks, the new store will offer a variety of Asian grocery options to residents. The 11,000 square foot store has been under construction since October 2024, according to the CBJ.

What Kind of Food Will the Market Have?

Hornbill Asian Market will offer a variety of Asian food items as well as fresh produce and meat, according to the CBJ. The store will also have a large selection of frozen seafood and other ethnic foods, including Mexican, Islander, and African.

During the grand opening this weekend, the store is even offering a special discount of 15%. A 10% discount will be offered from December 22 through the 31st.

When Will the Market be Open?

The CBJ reports that the new Hornbill Asian Market will be open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Cedar Rapids location will be the fifth Hornbill Market, joining locations in Waterloo and Dubuque. It also has stores in Enid, Oklahoma, and St. Joseph, Missouri.
