Hazzard County is Opening a Second Location in Iowa City

Downtown Cedar Rapids' most popular bar is expanding to Johnson County! According to a new Facebook page, Hazzard County is preparing to open a new location in Iowa City's Ped Mall.

Hazzard County Iowa City will be located at 118 S Dubuque Street in Iowa City, which was most recently home to The Field House. Owner Brian Hughes told me that the space is much smaller than the Cedar Rapids location, but will have a very similar theme. Brian says, "we're not doing any major construction, mostly resurfacing to give it more of a country bar vibe." The plan is to have lots of TVs for watching games, too.

About Hazzard County

Hazzard County has been a popular late night destination in Downtown Cedar Rapids since it first opened in 2012. The bar was originally located at 329 2nd Ave SE, but moved to a bigger and newer building just up the street in 2018.

The move to 402 2nd Ave SE was a huge upgrade in terms of space. According to a 2018 article from the Cedar Rapids Gazette, the bar went from 4,800 square-feet to 8,372 square-feet, almost doubling in size. More space allowed for a bigger bar, beer garden, stage and, most importantly, bathrooms! I waited in VERY long lines for the tiny bathroom at the old location, but the new bar has ten stalls, which has made things SO MUCH BETTER.

Hazzard County is technically a country bar, so there is lots of country music, but they do play other genres of music later in the evening so that guests can dance. On a typical Friday or Saturday night, you'll find a packed dance floor and a line down the street.

Opening Date

The current plan is to have Hazzard County Iowa City open on August 1st. The timing is perfect, since University of Iowa students will be back for the fall semester that month! Once the bar begins welcoming customers, it will be open Tuesday through Saturday, "with great drink specials for the students."
