Brain’s Wife Enjoyed This Guilty Pleasure Fast Food on Her B-Day
Monday was my wife Holly's birthday. I'd normally take her someplace a bit nicer for lunch or dinner, but she has been sick the past few days and didn't feel much like going out. What she did feel like doing was indulging in a meal that had no redeeming nutritional value. We've all been there before. You're having a bad day or week or month. You just want to cram something in your mouth that you know your body will reject in a matter of hours.
Holly asked for such a meal yesterday. I couldn't say no. It was her birthday, after all. So I honored her request and went to Long John Silvers. There is only one Long John Silvers left in Cedar Rapids at 2630 Williams Blvd. SW. I hit up the drive-through and got her a fish fillet, hush puppies, and fries. But the real star of any meal from Long John Silvers are what are known as the crunchies. Little pieces of the batter they use to coat the fish and chicken. Those glorious golden brown floaties are scooped up and put in your to-go box too!
So did I partake in the Long John Silvers feast? Of course! I enjoyed two chicken strips and some hush puppies myself! It was a holiday, after all. There used to be a Long John Silvers near the Town and Country Shopping Center on First Ave. in Cedar Rapids. It is now a Taco Depot location, but you can tell the building used to be a Long John Silvers. I used to stop there once a year or so, to get myself a guilty pleasure meal.
There is no harm in giving in to your inner fast-food demons once in a while. Eating meals like Long John Silvers crunchies three times a week? Well, that might be a different story. I think I see a salad on the menu for Holly and me this week!
