The use of suppressors on guns in the state of Iowa is now legal. Governor Terry Branstad signed the bill into law yesterday. The bill goes into effect immediately and makes Iowa one of 40 states to legalize the device, also known as a silencer.

A silencer is meant to muffle the sound of a gun when fired. Supporters say it reduces the potential for hearing damage while shooting.

Suppressors are regulated by federal law. Iowans who want to purchase one will have to pass a background check and pay a fee.
