Get Ready, Cedar Rapids – A New Neighborhood Grocery Store Is on Its Way!
A Johnson County non-profit will be teaming up with Newbo City Market to bring a new community grocery store to Cedar Rapids.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Newbo previously announced plans to add a grocery store as part of its $5.5 million expansion project. Yesterday, it was announced that Iowa City-based Field to Family will oversee the new store.
What is Field to Family?
The Gazette reports that Field to Family is a non-profit food hub that sources food from more than 70 producers in and around Johnson County. The food is distributed to local schools, food banks, and other wholesale partners in Eastern Iowa. The Field to Family website states that the group will source fresh produce up to 100 miles from Johnson County.
What will the new Grocery Store Look Like?
The Gazette reports that the new grocery store will be called The Market Basket. Officials say that it will mark a change for Field and Family, which normally focuses on delivery and distribution. The organization is reportedly in the early planning stages of the new store and is working with Field to Family producers to identify how to stock the store with local products for year-round shopping.

When Will the New Grocery Store at Newbo Open?
The grocery store is part of the larger $5.5 million project at the Newbo City Market that will bring more shop space, an indoor stage, and an upper mezzanine level to the market, according to the Gazette. A groundbreaking celebration is scheduled for September with a tentative construction timeline of around eight months. That would mean The Market Basket could be open by late spring, early summer of 2026.
