University of Iowa Apologizes for On-Court Incident With Hoiberg
There was a storm brewing inside of Carver Hawkeye-Arena on Tuesday night. A court storming. After Iowa defeated #9 Nebraska for its first win over a ranked opponent of the year, fans rushed onto the court to celebrate with Ben McCollum and the Hawkeyes. The only problem is that the Cornhuskers were also still on the court.
Fan Involved With Nebraska Head Coach
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that a video posted to social media after the game showed a fan interacting with Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg at the end of the team handshake line. ESPN reports the fan heckled Hoiberg and pointed his phone at him. Hoiberg reportedly made a swiping motion at the phone, but instead hit a member of the Iowa staff.
University of Iowa Issues an Apology
The Gazette reports that on Wednesday, the University of Iowa issued a statement explaining that despite implementing its court-intrusion guidelines, an individual gained access to the court through a restricted area and put Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg and his players in a reactive situation. The statement goes on to apologize for the incident and promises a review of security procedures, according to the Gazette.
ESPN reports that it discussed the situation with both schools and that no disciplinary action will be taken against Hoiberg. Nebraska's athletic department and Hoiberg have declined to comment on the story.
This should make the rematch in Lincoln on March 8th even more fun!
