Famous Movies Filmed in Iowa [LIST]
The state of Iowa has been the filming location for some terrific movies over the years. Here are some of the most remembered and some of the absolute best, and the official trailers for all of them.
Twister
Twenty years old already, Twister (1996) is the top-grossing movie ever filmed in Iowa. It brought in $241 million in the U.S. and nearly a half-billion worldwide.
It was filmed in Ames, Boone, Eldora, Rippey, and Whitten Iowa.
Field of Dreams
Arguably the most well-known movie ever made in Iowa it was filmed in Farley, Dubuque and, of course, Dyersville. Kevin Costner looks so young! Then again, it was 1989.
Starman
Cedar Rapids was one of the filming spots for this 1984 movie that starred Jeff Bridges. He received a nomination for Best Actor for his role in the film, which also led to a television series.
The Crazies
A 2010 horror film that takes place in Ogden Marsh, Iowa. You won’t find that town on a map, as it’s fictional. The filming was actually done partially in Lennox, Iowa.
Michael
This 1996 film featured John Travolta, Andie MacDowell, and William Hurt. Two reporters from Chicago travel to rural Iowa in the movie to investigate an elderly woman’s claim that she shares her home with an angel. It was filmed partially near Vinton.
Children of the Corn
A 1984 horror classic from Stephen King. The Children of the Corn was originally a short story that appeared in Penthouse magazine. Yep, really. It was filmed in and around Sioux City.
Final Season
The most recent movie filmed in Cedar Rapids, as far as we can tell, is this one. 2007 was the year... has it already been nine years since Veterans Memorial Stadium was home to much of the filming for this one? Wow! Sutliff also was part of the movie and Norway, of course.
Bridges of Madison County
Filmed around Winterset in 1995, the film brought the incredible talents of Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep to Iowa. The wonderful and scenic love story brought in 182 million worldwide. Streep was nominated for Best Actress for her role in the film.
We know we missed a bunch of 'em. Do you have a favorite Iowa-filmed movie that's not on the list?
