Sykora Bakery in the Czech Village may be forced to close if a new Go Fund Me campaign falls short of its goal.

The bakery located at 76 16th Ave. SW has been in operation for 116 years. Prior to 1927, it was known as Kosek Bakery, then changed to Sykora Bakery. The owners say it still has plenty of life left in it, and they don't want to close.

Unfortunately, the historic bakery in the heart of Czech Village may have to shut its doors due to dramatically rising flood insurance rates beginning July 15, 2019.

Despite the potential for a flood wall, the flood insurance premium which is $4,723 (2019), is set to go up 25% annually for the next four years rising to $9,400 (2022). The Rocarek family are being forced to refinance the mortgage and options are running out.

The goal is to raise $20,000 with a Go Fund Me page with plans to convert the upstairs into an Airbnb.

Sykora Bakery is one of the last family-owned bakeries to offer Czech delicacies such as kolaches and houska. Now a full Czech, Moravian, and Slovak restaurant menu have also been added.
