The new tenant for the old Sears building at Lindale Mall in Cedar Rapids has finally been revealed!

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Dick's House of Sport plans to go into the old building. The store will include an outdoor, year-round, multi-use field according to documents that will be discussed at Tuesday's Cedar Rapids city council meeting. The public hearings will be used to make the former Sears store an urban renewal site. The Gazette reports that the meeting will also include a proposed redevelopment agreement between the city and Reserve Development of Dallas, doing business as Shops at Cedar Rapids LLC.

The Gazette reports the company purchased the site vacated by Sears in 2018 for $3.4 million. They have been actively recruiting Dick's House of Sport to occupy the space. By now, you're probably saying to yourself, wait...isn't there already a Dick's Sporting Goods in Cedar Rapids? You are correct. Dick's has been open across from Lindale Mall for several years. The Gazette states that it isn't clear if both stores will co-exist.

So how is Dick's House of Sport different from Dick's Sporting Goods? How about the size? Dick's House of Sport is at least 100,000 square feet and gives customers products, but also in-store experiences like golf simulators, rock climbing walls, and baseball and softball hitting cages according to the Gazette. The first House of Sport opened in 2021 and Dick's plans to open 100 more by 2027.

Currently, the closest Dick's House of Sport is located in Davenport.
