Cedar Rapids Restaurant Honors Betty White With a New Martini & Fundraiser
Fong's Pizza in Cedar Rapids is home to all sorts of great pizza and drink options, but this month, the focus is on one drink in particular. This morning, Fong's revealed their January features, and one of the new items on the menu is the 'Golden Girl Martini.' The new cocktail contains Tito's vodka, triple sec, lemon juice, and sugar, and was inspired by the iconic Betty White, who passed away at the age of 99 on December 31st. But, the name isn't the only way that the drink honors Betty. According to the Facebook post:
"Honoring Betty White, we will be donating a portion of every Golden Girl Martini this month to the local animal shelters Dogs Forever, Cedar Valley Humane Society, & Last Hope Animal Rescue."
During her life, Betty White was a fierce lover of animals and a "pioneering animal rights activist," according to the New York Post. The president and CEO of the ASPCA told the publication, "Betty White demonstrated a lifelong commitment to helping animals in need, including dedicated support for local shelters and animal welfare endeavors, fiercely promoting and protecting animal interests in her entertainment projects, and personally adopting many rescued animals.” Raising money for local animal shelters is a perfect way to honor Betty's life and embody her passion and generosity.
Dogs Forever and Last Hope Animal Rescue are just two of the amazing local organizations that we work with here at the radio station for our Furry Friday segment each week. The other two are Safe Haven of Iowa County and SAINT Rescue, which are also fantastic groups. Even if you don't feel like ordering a Golden Girl Martini from Fong's, please consider donating time, supplies, or money to any of the great rescues we have here in Eastern Iowa in honor of Betty White. Her legacy will live on forever.
