Counseling Corner 3/6
Dear Brain and Steele,
My 8 year old isn't the best at sports and is a bit on the shy side. That being said, I love him more than life itself. The other night we were playing air hockey and I was so into the competitive zone , I didn't realize that I may have been being a jerk by consistently beating him over and over again.
But, then I thought about how kids get awards and rewards for everything they do -no matter how they perform and I had an internal parenting struggle. I also have a 10 year old who's smarter than I am but not very coordinated. Can I destroy HIM at competitive sports?
When it comes to competitive sports and games at home...do I let my kid score points, or win once in awhile just to make them feel better?
Dan
