Chewbacca Mom, James Corden + J.J. Abrams Attempt to Recreate Viral Magic
Barely a week after Candace Payne, a.k.a. the "Chewbacca Mask Mom," live-streamed the rollicking unboxing of her Star Wars Chewbacca Electronic Mask, the viral web star has already sought out to recreate the moment with James Corden in a new clip.
With The Late Late Show host in the passenger seat, Payne, wearing her signature wookie mask and black t-shirt, purports to drive Corden to his talk-show gig. Unfortunately for the comedian, it looks like he's going to be late. Cause of delay? His driver's uncontrollable fits of giggling and sheer awe at the inherent hilarity that is her prized possession.
As a seemingly annoyed Corden pleads with Payne to get the show on the road ("I know that you're pleased with your purchase...Is there any way we can leave now and hurry this up?"), she continues her fit of hysterics. Soon, a very special guest joins the two—Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J Abrams—from the backseat of the car, offering up some direction on how to accurately portray the nuances of Han Solo's furry bestie. Before long, all three are wearing Chewbacca masks and rolling with laughter. Watch below:
While the skit fails to recapture the natural magic of the original video, it still twinkles with the same pure, infectious joy as Payne's live-stream.
In what will likely be remembered as the ultimate fan-sourced viral marketing moment of 2016, on Thursday May 19 Payne live-streamed a Star Wars toy haul from a parking lot to Facebook, racking up 50 million views in the span of 24 hours. The video, a joyful, self-filmed clip of the Texas mom laughing hysterically at the unassuming electronic Chewbacca mask she had just purchased at Kohl's for her birthday, has since become a major web sensation — even resulting in the product selling out at retail stores nationwide.
