Cedar Rapids Shelves Controversial School Calendar

A proposed schedule change for the Cedar Rapids school district that would have seen students have a late start every Monday morning has been shelved for now. At a public meeting last night, numerous concerned parents and educators spoke out against the plan.

Currently, students in the district get out early on select Wednesdays for staff learning days. The proposed schedule for next year would have done away with those, and instead had a late start every Monday during the school year. Most people who spoke last night were against the change, saying the schedule change would disrupt the morning routine of getting kids to school, and then parents to work. Many still said that they understand the need for teachers to have time for professional development, but that this isn't the schedule for it.

Cedar Rapids Superintendent Brad Buck says the school board will go back and re-examine areas of concern.
