A Life-Changing Donation Brings Cedar Rapids Senior Center to Life
After a 17-year absence, the city of Cedar Rapids will once again be home to a dedicated center for senior citizens. And it is all thanks to a HUGE anonymous donation!
New Senior Center Will Break Ground in Cedar Rapids
The Corridor Business Journal reports that Horizon's Center for Older Adults is about to become a reality. An anonymous donor chipped in $2 million towards the center, bringing the capital campaign up to the required 65% level to start construction. So far, $5.5 million has been raised for the project, which hopes to break ground in February of 2026.
City Has Been Without a Senior Center for 17 Years
The CBJ reports that the 13,000 square foot facility will mark the return of a dedicated senior center in Cedar Rapids. The previous center, the Witwer Center, was destroyed in the 2008 flood. Numerous efforts to restore the facility failed. The CBJ reports the building will be in high demand. Demographic data shows that 30% of Linn County residents will be age 55 and older by 2030.

Where Will the Senior Center Be Located?
According to the CBJ, Horizons plans on renovating its building in the Oak Hill-Jackson neighborhood. That portion of Cedar Rapids has the highest percentage of solo seniors. The senior center will feature a large cafe, fitness studio, library, movie room, three activity spaces, and an outdoor pickleball court. Construction on the project is expected to take 12 months.
Horizons will continue its capital campaign as it looks to raise the remaining $1.9 million needed for the project, according to the CBJ.
