Cedar Rapids to Open Its First Senior Center in Nearly 20 Years

Nearly two decades after losing its senior center to the flood of 2008, the city of Cedar Rapids is finally getting a new one.

Horizons to Open New Senior Center

CBS2 reports that Horizons of East Central Iowa will open the B. Young Center at its existing facility located at 819 5th Street SE. The center will be designed for adults 55 and older to build friendships, learn new skills, and stay involved in the community. Horizons President and CEO Katie Oatsvall told CBS2 that the new center is for people over the age of 55 who still want to make connections.

"Those who have entered retirement, those who are 55 plus those who still want to connect and belong to our community, but really lack those designated spaces to continue making friendships, to continue making connections."

CBS2 reports that Horizons is in the final stages of a $5.5 million fundraising campaign and will turn to the public to raise the remaining $500,000.

What Happened to the Old Senior Center?

Prior to the flood of 2008, the Witwer Senior Center served as a gathering place for older adults in Cedar Rapids, according to CBS2. When it was destroyed by floodwaters, the center never returned. Horizons officials say that the loss could be felt in the community. CBS2 reports that 58% of residents in Cedar Rapids over the age of 75 live alone.

What Will The New Senior Center Have?

CBS2 reports that the 14,000-square-foot center will take up most of the lower level of Horizon's building. Plans include a library, game room, fitness studio, and even outdoor pickleball courts. A cafe is also planned, which would be open to the public.

The new senior center at Horizons is expected to open in early 2027.
