New Sculpture Park Planned for Mays Island in Cedar Rapids
A new public space is planned for Mays Island in Cedar Rapids that will combine art, nature, and the community.
The Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust Sculpture Park
On October 15th, the city of Cedar Rapids announced a partnership with Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust, whose lead gift will help bring the signature artwork to Mays Island. The Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust Sculpture Park will be a free public space where residents can come and enjoy art along the riverfront and enjoy time outdoors at one of the city's most recognizable places.
Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust made the announcement in conjunction with the company's 25th anniversary.
When Will the Project Begin?
According to the City of Cedar Rapids, the selection of the park's anchor artwork will start now and wrap up in 2027. Development and site preparation will also begin. In 2027, improvement projects on Mays Island will begin, including;
- Renovating the entry plaza and redesigning the canopy.
- An accessible sidewalk network
- Coordinated signage, lighting, and amenities.
The city stated that it plans to unveil the anchor artwork for the park in 2028, which will help mark 20 years of progress and recovery since the flood of 2008.
