Cedar Rapids Residents Displaced By Two Overnight House Fires

According to the American Red Cross, house fires are most common in December and January, a harsh reality that a pair of Cedar Rapids households are dealing with after overnight fires.

The first Wednesday night fire the Cedar Rapids Fire Department responded to was a 2-alarm blaze in the 300 block of 17th St. S.E. The exterior of the 3-story home was on fire when fire crews arrived, after being called to the scene just after 6:30 Wednesday night. Unfortunately, the fire had gotten to the interior of the home as well and two more fire trucks were called to the scene. Cedar Rapids firefighters got the fire under control within about 30 minutes, but the home sustained smoke and water damage throughout, extensive fire damage to the top two floors, and moderate fire damage on the first floor.

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department was called to the second house fire at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday night. A fire in the attic and exterior of the home, near a chimney, was under control within ten minutes of crews arriving at the home in the 1500 block of Havenwood Court N.E. The split-foyer house sustained moderate damage from the fire both inside, and outside, near the chimney. The first floor and basement of the home both suffered moderate smoke and water damage.

The four adults who lived in the 17 St. S.E. home and two adults and two children in the Havenwood Court N.E. home were all uninjured. Unfortunately, the occupants of each household have been displaced by the fires.
