Cedar Rapids Police Officer Awarded for Taking a Stand Against Animal Cruelty
Animal cruelty cases are ones where the punishment doesn't always fit the crime. It's nice when justice is served and that's what happened thanks to a Cedar Rapids police officer. He decided to take a stand against animal cruelty and now he's being honored for it.
According to KCRG, Cedar Rapids Police officer Christopher J. Collins was awarded with the 2021 Humane Law Enforcement Award from the Humane Society of the United States for his efforts in an animal neglect investigation. The report states that Collins led an investigation, leading to an arrest and animal neglect charges involving a German shepherd.
The German shepherd named Luna was extremely malnourished. According to the Humane Society, in July of 2020 she was surrendered to Wildthunder Wildlife & Animal Rehabilitation & Sanctuary in Independence, Iowa. The director of the organization documented her condition and "it became apparent that she had been deprived of food and was suffering from long-term neglect."
The Humane Society's press release states that Officer Collins launched an investigation and arrested a suspect (who plead guilty) on charges of animal neglect. For Collins efforts he received the Humane Law Enforcement award, which are "presented annually to officers who have taken an exemplary stand against animal cruelty."
