Cedar Rapids is Home to the Best Hot Dogs in the State of Iowa
A Cedar Rapids restaurant has been recognized for having the best hot dogs... again! According to a new article from Love Food, The Flying Wienie is still the best hot dog joint in the state. The article reads:
"The Flying Wienie is a customer favorite not only in Cedar Rapids, but all of Iowa. It's loved for the generous portions, friendly service and, of course, sausages. People particularly rave about the Chicago Dog with relish, pickles, tomato, celery salt, mustard, and peppers, and the skin-on, hand-cut fries."
The Flying Wienie first opened its doors in Cedar Rapids in 1999 under owner John Martin, a Chicago-area native. Located at 103 8th Avenue SW, the big yellow plane on top of the roof makes it very easy to find. According to a 2016 article from the Iowa City Press-Citizen, the building used to be a Skelly Oil service station when it was built in 1929.
In addition to their famous Chicago dogs, The Flying Wienie is also known for their Italian beef sandwiches, their gyros, and their delicious fries. Other hot dogs and sausages on the menu include the chili and chili cheese dogs, the bacon cheese dog, Italian sausage, Polish sausage, and brats. All the sausages are ground fresh inside the restaurant! My personal favorite order is the Chicago dog or gyro with cheese fries and a bottle of Millstream Root Beer.
