New Stats Show Crime Is Going Down in Cedar Rapids
If you ask the average citizen of Cedar Rapids, they would probably guess that crime is going up. Let's face it. We hear about crime all the time. It dominates the headlines and the news. But according to new statistics from the Cedar Rapids Police Department, crime is actually going down this year.
KCRG reports that according to statistics for 2024, crime is trending down. According to a report released on Tuesday, rates for homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, theft, and shots fired for the first 10 months of the year are down compared to last year and the five-year average.
According to a Facebook post, the CRPD credits the use of Community Policing and relationship building as reasons for the falling crime numbers. KCRG reports that police are particularly pleased with the drop in shots fired reports, which is down 56% from last year and the five-year average.
One of the largest drops in crime is in homicides. KCRG reports that last year there were eight homicides in Cedar Rapids, which is even with the five-year average. So far in 2024, there has only been one homicide in the city of Cedar Rapids. That is an 88% drop.
