C.J. Beathard Likely Headed Back To The Bench After 49ers Trade For Another QB
Former Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard had given a few people a reason to watch the San Francisco 49ers this season. Many people back here in Iowa have enjoyed watching Beathard move his way to the top of the depth chart. Unfortunately, the wins haven't followed as the 49ers are 0-8. The organization needs help, and the pulled off a huge trade for what they hope is their quarterback of the future.
According to ESPN, the 49ers have traded a second-round draft pick in 2018 to the New England Patriots for quarterback Jimmy Garappolo. Garappolo has been stuck behind some quarterback named Brady in New England. The 25-year-old is set to become a free agent after this season. It's assumed he'll sign a new deal with the 49ers before the season is through.
While this likely means Beathard is headed back to the life of an NFL backup quarterback, it certainly is only a momentary setback. Beathard is still just a rookie with plenty of football left whether that's in San Francisco or with another team. Who's to say that Garappolo will find success? Either way, it's a huge trade for a league that typically doesn't see many moves just before the trade deadline.
