Waking up to a cloudy Sunday morning after putting in a full day of chores on Saturday is just the kind of sucker punch that can lay anyone flat out.
We can all fall into a funk way too easily these days, so when the spouse says "let's get out of the house", I'm like the dog with his head already outside the car window.
And a short drive in Iowa is all it takes to be reminded that there's a lot more to discover nearby than you may realize.
If you've never seen the magnificent homes in the Heritage Hill district of Burlington Iowa, you're in for a visual treat. Consider this a sneak peek of your own self-guided tour of the elegant mansions built during the booming days of Burlington in the mid-1800s.
Over a hundred years ago, this section of town offered the best seats in the house, with big homes owned by the town's richest: successful fur traders, railroad owners, lumber and river barons.
They all contributed to building up another bustling little river town where life on the Mississippi became the stuff of folklore legend.
Take a stroll through the Heritage Hill neighborhood on a mild spring day, and smell the blossoms. If you try, you can almost hear those steamboat whistles once again.
