Blake Shelton Says ‘Jesus Got a Tight Grip’ on His Soul in New Song [LISTEN]
Blake Shelton knows he's headed for Heaven -- even if he raises a little hell before he gets there. In his new song, "Jesus Got a Tight Grip," the country star says God isn't giving up on him.
Readers can press play above to hear "Jesus Got a Tight Grip," an upbeat, faith-filled track about God's never-ending love. "Well, I ain't never been an angel / I ain't never been called a saint," Shelton sings, adding later, "I've been a little more cold beer than holy water / It's true." Nonetheless, "Might have a little rust on my halo / But when I'm gone, I know where I'll go / 'Cause Jesus got a tight grip on my soul."
"The Devil reaches out, but he can't grab hold / 'Cause Jesus got a tight grip on my soul," Shelton repeats throughout the song's choruses. At the end, he's backed by a gospel choir.
"Jesus Got a Tight Grip," which Shelton co-wrote with Chase McGill, Jessi Alexander and Rhett Akins, is one of five new songs on Fully Loaded: God's Country, Shelton's forthcoming new album that will mix some of his big hits with those previously unreleased tracks. Thus far, he's released the No. 1 single "God's Country" and its follow-up track, "Hell Right," from the project. The full track listing has yet to be released, but the project will include 12 songs.
The news of Fully Loaded: God's Country follows comments from Shelton about, perhaps, never making a full album again. “I do [have more songs] and I’ve got other stuff that I’m pumped about, but when I think about an album right now I’m like, ‘Do people care about them anymore?’ I don’t know," Shelton previously admitted. "But I’m having a blast just releasing singles. Maybe I’ll do that from now on.”
Shared Shelton when announcing his new album, "Well, I knew the label would come up with some plan to release an album. I've been vocal about how much I like this new way of releasing songs more frequently. It keeps me excited and gives me the opportunity to find the hot new song that I love and get it out to the fans quickly. I think they like it, too." He says he'll continue to share Fully Loaded: God's Country's new songs ahead of its official release.
Fully Loaded: God's Country is due out on Dec. 13.
