The FBI has determined that an assault near the University of Iowa campus last month was NOT a hate crime. On April 30th, 19-year-old Marcus Owens was attacked by three white men who used racial slurs during the incident. Owens was hospitalized after the attack.

Owens and his family issued a statement last night apologizing for the incident. In the statement, the family says that alcohol was involved and Marcus' version of events was different than what investigators uncovered. During the investigation, police found that the original argument was between two students who were members of fraternities.

Police do not anticipate any charges being filed in the case. Authorities will hold a press conference later today in Iowa City.
