Arrest Made in Fatal Iowa City Shooting

Iowa City police announced on Monday that they have made an arrest in a fatal shooting case from earlier this month. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Iowa City police officers were called to 615 S. Governor Street, No. 6, at around 7:53 p.m. on February 12th for a report of a man being shot and killed during a robbery. Multiple people were reportedly at the scene of the crime.

Police arrived to find 19-year-old Quincy Russom dead inside. The Gazette reports that police officials said that 22 year old Sammy Imaedeen Hamed, a transient, was identified as one of the people in the apartment when Russom died. Police also learned that the shooting happened around 30 minutes before they arrived at the scene.

Hamed was found near the crime scene within hours of the initial 911 call. Police say that he had items belonging to Russom, including his cell phone, according to the Gazette. An analysis of a shell casing found at Russom's apartment also matched a firearm found on Hamed.

The Gazette reports that Hamed has been in police custody since February 13th. He now faces a charge of first degree murder. The charge is punishable by an automatic life prison sentence. Iowa City police officials say despite the arrest, the investigation into the case is far from over. Leads in the case are still being looked into.
